The Third North Lanarkshire Inter-School Rocketry Competition - 2009

THE THIRD NLIRC:

Rockets ready to go

Team of rockets prepared for launch

Clarkston Primary before launchThe Third Annual North Lanarkshire Inter School Rocketry Competition (NLIRSC) took on two new schools during 2009, namely St Margaret of Scotland Primary School, Cumbernauld and Clarkston Primary School, Airdrie and they performed magnificently.

St Margaret of Scotland - All systems goRocketry workshops were conducted and a second visit was arranged to instruct the children on how to build and fly their own Aquajet (Water Rockets). The Aquajets were then flown and the five rockets from each team that attained the furthest distance were then taken forward to be flown in the NLIRC final.
This year, Aileen Malone was the mascot for Clarkston Primary School, having helped the kids build their rockets, while Gavin Bain looked after the twoWoodlands Primary plan to conquer all Cumbernauld schools - Woodlands and St Margaret of Scotland while Mr Paul Jordan of Golfhill Primary (having cracked the art of rocket building) taught and helped the kids of Golfhill build their rockets, with Paul Clark testing them out before the competition.
Everyone was wondering how this years competition would turn out. Last years winners Golfhill and runners up Woodlands definately had a head start on the two newcomers however the newcomers were extremely keen and competitive right from the start and it was soon obvious that the competition this year would be keenly contested.

THE FINAL :

Golfhill Primary, St Margaret of Scotland Primary, Woodlands Primary and Clarkston Primary Schools all duly arrived at Airdrie Academy Secondary school and with some sunny weather and little wind, all was set fair for this years competition to provide some good distances.

First of 20 rockets is primed and ready to goOn hand this year was Mr John Bonsor. Mr Bonsor has for many years run the International Rocketry week at Largs and had agreed to keep a keen eye on the competition and to mark out the distances at the end of the competition.

This year, as the weaether was good, the rockets were launched at 50psi.

Paul Clark and Arthur Bannister then began to launch the rockets (ably assisted by the pupils who gave a loud countdown for each rocket).Quick - Let Go !

Quickly, it was evident that the competition would be very very close and right up until the end it was impossible to tell who would be the overall winners.

With the launches over, the counting was conducted by Mr John Bonsor and he was assisted by Paul Clark, Arthur Bannister and Aileen Malone who then returned to the main hall for the presentations and the prizegiving.

It was that big
