THE FOURTH NLIRC:

Airdrie Academy Team Rockets Kilsyth Academy Budding Rocketeers

Airdrie Academy show their rockets and their various designs

St Margaret of Scotland Primary Rocket TeamThe Fourth Annual North Lanarkshire Inter School Rocketry Competition (NLIRSC) gathered pace this year by introducing a new competition for secondary school pupils as well as the usual Primary 7 schoolpupils competition. Dunrobin Primary took Clarkston Primary Rockets prior to flightpart for the first time with Clarkston defending their title and Golfhill and St Margaret of Scotland vying to reclaim the team trophy, as past winners.
Kilsyth Academy and Airdrie Academy competed in Dunrobin Primary School Rockets Prior to flighta close run competition for the new Airdrie & District Round Table sponsored trophy which proved to be a keenly fought competition.

Golfhill Primary Rocket Team sit by the launchpadAs in previous years, various rocketry workshops were conducted by our A.A.A members. This year Golfhill were confident enough to go it alone and build their own rockets unaided by a workshop visit - a brave step as the competition would be tough from the other schools.
Raymond McCall on the launchpadThe preliminary flights prior to the competition day saw over 150 children design and fly a variety of rockets, trialing various designs and well as being artistically extremely creative. Some flew very well, others, Raymond Prepares some rocket fuel - keep your distance pleasewell...a little less well however A.A.A were pleased to note the continued enthusiasm from the school pupils. Airdrie may wery well see legions of rocket scientists in the future.
Looking downwind from the flightpadThis year, the preliminary workshops were aided by Gavin Bain, Paul Clark, Paul Jordan and Aileen Malone.
Per all other years, the Aquajets were then flown and the five rockets from each team that attained thePaul Clark inspects the launchpad prior to a launch furthest distance were then taken forward to be flown in the 4th NLIRC final, to held in Airdrie Academy Secondary School.

THE FINAL :

Note the change in clothing from Raymonds drysuit to Paul's wetsuit and glovesGolfhill Primary, St Margaret of Scotland Primary, Dunrobin Primary and Clarkston Primary Schools all duly arrived at Airdrie Academy Secondary school and with our usual sunny weather and this year a Rockets after they have landed back at the workshop - crashstronger cross wind, all was set fair again for 2010's competition to provide some good distances.

This year, as the weaether was good, the rockets were launched again at 50psi.

St Margaret of Scotland Primary SchoolRaymond McCall then began to launch the rockets, and Paul Clark continued after the first half had been flown with the pupils opting in for a good old fashioned soaking as per the tradition at this event.

A running Commentery was ably provided by Paul Clark and later by Arthur Bannister.
