In the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns birth, not many people realise that Burns had a lifetime’s fascination with astronomy, indeed with all aspects of advances in science and emerging technologies.  This can be found in his poetry, and comes through strongly from his letters. Dr Catherine Smith,  author of  "The Stars of Robert Burns",  will be talking about this unexpected angle on astronomy..

24-31 August 09 All AAA Members International Rocket Week - South Whittlieburn Farm (SWF), in Brisbane Glen, near Largs. As Scotland's premier aquajet rocketeer's, A.A.A will be attending this new venue hosted by our good friend John Bonsor to stake our claim to the Schwiglhoffer trophy. All budding Rocket scientists are welcome to come along and join in. Click here for more information on the competition and the new venue. A.A.A Members usually attend on the Saturday and the Sunday (this year being the 29 & 30th August).

At 2pm, Paul Clark (Honorary Curator) will present a 30 minute talk on the observatory in the Library. Members of the public (young and old will be made most welcome). 02 October 09 Jim Lovell (Apollo 13) An evening with Jim Lovell - commander of Apollo 13. 2010 will see the 40th anniversary of the return of Apollo 13 back to Earth in what was so nearly a tragic space event. A.A.A Members will be journeying down to Pontefract, Yorkshire for an evening in the Company of Jim Lovell. See Contact Aileen Malone for further information.

29 October 09 Dr Catherine Smith / Paul Clark / Fiona McDonald Venue - Airdrie Library (7:00pm)- Dr Catherine Smith provide a highly informative and popular talk on 19th June this year. In association with Airdrie Public Library Book Festival, Dr Smith has been invited back by popular demand by the Library department and will be lecturing on the Astronomy of Robert Burns in the Annexe to the Library from 7pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend and Dr Smith will have some books for purchasing and signing - grab one in this the year of homecoming.
Thursday Autumn moonwatch will commence afterwards. The newly refurbished observatory will be open to the public for views of the moon tonight (from 9pm - 10pm).
30 October 09 Professor Ian Robson Guest Speaker - Professor Ian Robson - Supermassive Black holes.
This highly illustrated talk will outline our place in the Universe, describe the key points about active galaxies, give a simplified overview of black holes, how they form and how they power active galaxies, and will show how activity in galaxies may be a natural part of evolution. The talk will also include a look at our own Milky Way Galaxy and the evidence for a supermassive black hole at its centre.
Professor Ian Robson, currently Director, United Kingdom Astronomical Technology Centre, Royal Observatory Edinburgh. Previously Director of the Joint Astronomy Centre, Hilo, Hawaii (James Clerk Maxwell and United Kingdon Infrared Telescopes), Head of Department and Director of Observatories University of Central Lancashire.

04 December 09 Robert Law Space Telescopes. Robert Law works at the Mills Observatory in Dundee and is a former curator at Airdrie Public Observatory, He is also the President of A.S.T.R.A.
Robert will be detailing the advances in space telescopes since the early 20th century right through to the Hubble Space Telescope as well as looking at future telescopes and the advances they will bring.
11 December 09 All members Christmas Dinner. Airdrie Branch invite all members to join them in Airdrie Arts Centre to celebrate the festivities together. Meal priced at £15 for Adults and £7 for kids. Bring your own bottle.
