As Scotland's premier aquajet rocketeer's, A.A.A will be attending this new venue hosted by our good friend John Bonsor to stake our claim to the Schwiglhoffer trophy. In association with Airdrie Public Library Book Festival, Dr Smith has been invited back by popular demand by the Library department and will be lecturing on the Astronomy of Robert Burns in the Annexe to the Library from 7pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend and Dr Smith will have some books for purchasing and signing - grab one in this the year of homecoming. Thursday Autumn moonwatch will commence afterwards. The newly refurbished observatory will be open to the public for views of the moon tonight (from 9pm - 10pm). |
| 30 October 09 | Professor Ian Robson | Guest Speaker - Professor Ian Robson - Supermassive Black holes. This highly illustrated talk will outline our place in the Universe, describe the key points about active galaxies, give a simplified overview of black holes, how they form and how they power active galaxies, and will show how activity in galaxies may be a natural part of evolution. The talk will also include a look at our own Milky Way Galaxy and the evidence for a supermassive black hole at its centre. Professor Ian Robson, currently Director, United Kingdom Astronomical Technology Centre, Royal Observatory Edinburgh. Previously Director of the Joint Astronomy Centre, Hilo, Hawaii (James Clerk Maxwell and United Kingdon Infrared Telescopes), Head of Department and Director of Observatories University of Central Lancashire. |

Robert will be detailing the advances in space telescopes since the early 20th century right through to the Hubble Space Telescope as well as looking at future telescopes and the advances they will bring. |
